"Every illegal act based on hatred and prejudice will be reviewed," says Silvio Almeida, Minister of Human Rights.
"We will not allow the ministry created to promote human rights policies to continue being used for the production of lies and prejudices," he declared.
247 - Silvio Almeida took office this Tuesday morning (3) as Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship and stated that "every illegal act based on hatred and prejudice will be reviewed by me and by President Lula (PT), who has always been committed to democracy".
"We will not allow the ministry created to promote human rights policies to continue being used to produce lies and prejudices," he declared.
During Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) government, the Ministry of Human Rights – along with the Ministries of Women and Family – was headed by Damares Alves (Republicanos). According to Almeida, the previous administration left "a devastated ministry." "Participatory councils were reduced or shut down, many voices in society were silenced, policies were discontinued, and the budget allocated to human rights was drastically reduced. As a final act of cruelty, the outgoing administration attempted – unsuccessfully – to abolish the Commission on the Dead and Disappeared. It failed!"
Almeida further stated that "Brazil has not yet adequately confronted the horrors of slavery, as well as other traumas that accumulate upon us, allowing its legacy – slavery and these traumas – to perpetuate in the form of racism, hunger, underemployment, and violence against Black and poor men and women in this country. Like many, I wish to move forward, but we will never accept the price of silence and injustice. True peace will be that which we build with truth, with the cultivation of memory, and the achievement of justice."
