247 The arrest of former senator Luiz Estevão (former PMDB) could help the Treasury recover up to R$ 2,25 billion embezzled during the construction of the São Paulo Labor Court building between 1992 and 1998.

According to regional federal prosecutor Maria Luisa Lima Carvalho, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office and the Attorney General's Office should initiate provisional enforcement, auctioning off assets seized by the courts, so that at least part of the billions of dollars embezzled from public coffers can be returned.

The former senator was arrested by the Federal Police this Saturday morning at his home in Brasília. Among the charges he faces, Estevão is sentenced to three years and six months for document forgery. The crime consisted of attempting to conceal the overpricing of the courthouse by altering accounting records. Due to his history of illegal activities, he will serve his sentence in a semi-open regime, not an open one, as the law allows for those sentenced to up to four years.

In 2012, Estevão signed an agreement with the Attorney General's Office to return R$ 468 million to the public treasury in 96 installments, but this was not agreed to by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in São Paulo.
