247 - The Michel Temer government has drawn up a plan to expand the use of nuclear energy in the country, with the construction of new nuclear power plants, as well as aiming to increase uranium exports and improve mining activity in the sector. According to the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, the document was produced by the Committee for the Development of the Brazilian Nuclear Program (CDPNB) and dates from last year.

The coordination of the committee, created in 2008 and previously under the responsibility of Casa Covil, has been under the command of General Sérgio Etchegoyen, Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI), for about a year. The objective is for the new draft of the Brazilian Nuclear Program (PNB) to reach Congress this year through a bill.

Etchegoyen has said that he would like to implement new nuclear power plants and resume construction of the Angra 3 plant, which was halted due to corruption allegations within the scope of Operation Lava Jato.

For environmentalists, however, it makes no sense to expand the use of nuclear energy in Brazil given the potential for using solar and wind energy, which are considered clean and safe. Furthermore, countries like Germany have already announced that they will abandon the use of nuclear energy. Germany is expected to shut down all of its nuclear power plants by 2022.
