247 - Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry and Trade, Geraldo Alckmin, stated this Tuesday (15) that the federal government cannot interfere in the decisions of the Judiciary, when commenting on the new 50% tariff imposed by the United States on Brazilian products. The measure, announced by US President Donald Trump, was justified based on actions by the Brazilian Judiciary against former President Jair Bolsonaro and US technology companies. The information is from the newspaper The Globe.

“First, let's separate legal issues. As Montesquieu said, the separation of powers is a cornerstone of the rule of law. The government has no power over another branch of government. And, regarding the tariffs, we will work to reverse them. They are absolutely inadequate,” Alckmin stated at the opening of a meeting with national industry leaders in Brasília.

The statement was made during a meeting that brought together 37 representatives from the industrial sector, as well as ministers such as Fernando Haddad (Finance), Rui Costa (Chief of Staff), Simone Tebet (Planning and Budget), and Silvio Costa Filho (Ports and Airports). The information was initially released by the national press.

The new US tariff provoked an immediate reaction from the Planalto Palace, which is trying to coordinate a joint response with the productive sector. According to Alckmin, the government will seek dialogue with US companies and entities that maintain integration with the Brazilian industrial chain.

"We want to highlight the federal government's commitment to listening to the entire private sector and working together to review this issue of U.S. tariffs," the vice president told business leaders.

The creation of an advisory committee, coordinated by Alckmin, was decided by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at a meeting last Sunday. The initiative aims to bring together representatives from industry and agribusiness to evaluate alternatives and strategies in the face of the tariff increase.

The government's idea is to transform the trade crisis into an agenda for national unity, with the direct involvement of the productive sector, and to signal that the tariffs imposed by the US are a matter of state, not just government.

In addition to meeting with industry representatives this morning, Alckmin will also meet with leaders from the agribusiness sector on Tuesday, another sector impacted by the American decision. Lula, although closely following the negotiations, will not participate directly in the meetings.
