He reported statistics on the worsening Covid-19 pandemic, which, with the Omicron variant spreading at an "astonishing" rate, "may kill 400 or more Brazilians a day within three weeks," he wrote.
Addressing the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, who runs the ministry in a manner aligned with Jair Bolsonaro's denialism, Srougi says:
"Minister Marcelo Queiroga: you, as a member of a class of heroes who recently changed the destinies of humanity and with a personal history that until recently earned you the respect and admiration of Brazilian cardiologists, do not have the right to tarnish your biography and shame your entourage with attitudes that are contributing to the annihilation of Brazil and our people," he writes.
"Therefore, I implore you to stand alongside so many sons and daughters of the nation and undertake the unrestricted fight against the pandemic, guided by science, inspiring and supporting other leaders, encouraging the application of recognized health measures, strengthening life support systems, disseminating honest statistics necessary for crisis management, and promoting the comprehensive and rapid vaccination of our population. Abandon opportunistic complacency and defend the Brazilian nation against the attacks of the virus and indecency," he continues.
