247 - Pastor Sergio Dusilek has announced that he will resign as president of the Baptist Convention of Rio de Janeiro. This information comes from a column by journalist [name missing]. Monica Bergamo, from Folha de S. Paulo, after being criticized by other evangelical leaders for participating in an event supporting the campaign of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). "Books he authored were even burned by other religious groups," the report highlights.

The event, organized by the PT's evangelical coordination, took place on Friday (9). On the occasion, Dusilek said that "this country can't stand another four years with this nefarious president that is there [Jair Bolsonaro]". Addressing Lula, the pastor also stated that "the best time for the Brazilian church that this land has ever seen was during his government" and added: "the Evangelical Church has to ask forgiveness from you". He also led the chant of "Olê, olê, olá, Lula, Lula".

After the event, the Brazilian Baptist Convention and other state congregations issued statements against the pastor, calling for his removal and even advocating for his expulsion from the Rio de Janeiro Baptist Convention. The report also states that "not even the pastor's parents—Pastor Darci Dusilek, who presided over the Brazilian Baptist Convention, and Nancy Dusilek, who was vice president of the organization—were spared from the attacks."

"I am suffering attacks and being targeted by a cancel culture," said Dusilek. "I decided to resign so as not to jeopardize the work of the convention," he added later. Dusilek, who says he voted for Mario Covas, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and Geraldo Alckmin against Lula in the 1989, 1994, and 2006 presidential campaigns, claims he learned "like Jesus of Nazareth" never to "demonize a person."

According to the pastor, other religious people are supporting the reelection of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) without any type of reaction or retaliation.

Former President Lula has been the target of constant attacks by religious leaders who support the current occupant of the Planalto Palace, including the spread of fake news that, if elected, the PT member will close churches and temples.
