Good Friday and the tradition of eating fish.
Learn about the religious reason for the restriction on red meat during the period known as Lent; however, priests affirm that it is not an obligation of the Catholic Church and eating meat on Good Friday is not a sin.
247 - One of the most important holidays for Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and recalls the period known as Lent, which refers to the 40 days that Christ fasted in the desert.
Lent is the period between Ash Wednesday, after Carnival, and Good Friday. And to commemorate Christ's fasting, the restriction on red meat was established for the faithful on all Wednesdays and Fridays.
The tradition, though still followed by many Catholics, is no longer an obligation of the church, which nowadays avoids using the word "prohibition" with the faithful. Eating red meat during Lent, say the priests, is not a sin.

A tradition at Easter, fish should be an option all year round.
The nutritional properties of fish make them an excellent source of protein for a healthy diet.
Among the traditions dedicated to Easter celebrations, fish is indispensable on the holiday menu. But the nutritional properties of fish make them a great protein alternative for a healthy diet throughout the year.
"Fish are considered important sources of iron, protein, vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus, iodine, and cobalt. In addition, they are a source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, considered beneficial fats for the body, acting in inflammatory processes, blood clotting, and having a favorable effect on reducing triglycerides, as well as helping to prevent cardiovascular and neurological diseases. It is recommended to consume fish at least twice a week," explains Roberta Rehem de Azevedo, from the General Coordination of Food and Nutrition team of the Ministry of Health.
According to the expert, the consumption of fish with fat and skin should be avoided, giving preference to always consuming them fresh. Furthermore, the nutritionist from the Coordination of Attention to the Health of the Server of the Ministry of Health, Nádia Amore, reminds us that there are healthier options than cod, which is very traditional at this time of year. "Salmon, tuna, and sardines are some more recommended examples, as they are good sources of omega-3," suggests the nutritionist. She also emphasizes that the method of preparation will also influence the nutritional value of the dish, and that the most recommended preparations are baked, grilled, or stewed.
The Brazilian Dietary Guidelines (2014 edition) also suggests using fish as a healthy ingredient in pirão (a type of fish stew). Culinary preparations of fish with vegetables such as bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions, or with fruits such as bananas and açaí, are very popular. The guide is open for public consultation until May 7th.
