The entire week will see temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius in São Paulo.

The record for the lowest temperature in the city could be broken; the coldest period occurs between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM.

247 – Continuing a sequence of cold weeks since the second half of May, São Paulo will experience daily temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius at different times of the day until Monday the 11th, but especially between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM. This is the forecast from meteorologist Josélia Pegorin of the Climatempo Institute. “The city's record low temperature could be broken by Sunday,” she believes. “And throughout this week, we will have temperatures below ten degrees every day in São Paulo.”

The coldest periods in the coming days, according to the forecast, will occur during the times when millions of São Paulo residents leave their homes to go to work, between four in the morning and eight in the morning. But there will also be no respite in the afternoon and evening. Yesterday, São Paulo recorded 9 degrees Celsius in the Campo de Marte region, in the northern zone.

Below are the analyses and forecasts from meteorologist Josélia Pegorin, submitted by her to Brasil 247. Our thanks!

Josélia Pegorin_Climatempo - Temperatures near -7ºC in Santa Catarina

This Tuesday dawned cold (or rather, frozen) in much of southern Brazil. All states recorded sub-zero temperatures again. In Rio Grande do Sul, according to measurements from the National Institute of Meteorology, the temperature reached -4°C in São José dos Ausentes, -3,8°C in Quarai, and -3,4°C in Vacaria. In Paraná, the temperature dropped to -1,3°C in Clevelândia and -0,5°C in General Carneiro.

These were just some of the lowest temperature records for this Tuesday. Even with sunshine throughout the day, in most of southern Brazil, the feeling of cold will still be very strong this afternoon, as this new polar air mass that has hit the region is very powerful.

The cold weather will remain intense throughout the week, and conditions are favorable for widespread frost in the southern region at least until Friday. Until then, frost is only not expected in northern Paraná and along the coast.

The temperature at dawn this Tuesday, July 5th, reached -6,9°C in Urupema, in the highest part of the Santa Catarina mountain range, according to measurements by Epagri/Ciram, the meteorological monitoring agency of the Santa Catarina state government.

This temperature was significantly lower than yesterday's, when Urupema recorded -3,7ºC, but it wasn't the lowest this year. On June 28th, Urupema recorded -8,8ºC, which was the lowest temperature recorded in Brazil this year.

Strong polar air mass still affecting southern Brazil.

A freezing afternoon in São Paulo: Technical standards vs. reality.

The passage of a cold front, accompanied by another strong mass of polar air, brought many clouds and caused a sharp drop in temperature in the city of São Paulo this Monday, July 4th. The city dawned cloudy, had drizzle, and the sun remained hidden throughout the afternoon. The lack of sun and the strong influx of polar air left the residents of São Paulo feeling like they were freezing all day. Around 16 pm, thermometers registered 11 degrees Celsius in the Campo de Marte region, in the north of the city, and only 9 degrees Celsius in the Congonhas airport region, in the south of the city. This is what the population of São Paulo, and Greater São Paulo in general, felt throughout this Monday: a cold between 9ºC and 12ºC.

However, technically, according to historical records, the maximum temperature this chilly Monday will be 15,6ºC, as measured by the National Institute of Meteorology. This is where technical rigor causes great confusion. According to technical standards, the highest temperature of a day is the highest value recorded between 21 PM the previous day and 21 PM on the day in question. And this is what happened, for the second time this year. The maximum temperature was recorded on the maximum thermometer at the Mirante de Santana weather station, but it occurred on Sunday night, after 21 PM. Normally, the maximum temperature of a day occurs between 14 PM and 16 PM. But sometimes situations like today's occur, which meteorologists call an "inverted maximum."

The previous record for the lowest maximum temperature in the city of São Paulo was 15,8ºC, on June 9th, but this value was also recorded on the night of June 8th. On the 9th itself, the temperature in the city barely exceeded 13ºC for most of the day. At the Mirante de Santana automatic weather station, the temperature at 15 PM this Monday was 12,4°C.

Residents of São Paulo will continue to experience very cold weather at least until next Saturday. Until then, thermometers will register temperatures slightly below 10ºC in the early morning hours. The sun will appear after the morning fog, but it will be a deceptive sun that will not be able to warm the intense polar air that has been over Greater São Paulo throughout the week.
