Governors say Teich's departure in less than 30 days is an affront to the country, and Bolsonaro is creating a cauldron of intrigue.
Governors harshly criticized Jair Bolsonaro for his guidelines on tackling the new coronavirus pandemic, which contradict science and encourage conflict, and resulted in the dismissal of two health ministers in less than a month.
247 - Nelson Teich's departure from the Ministry of Health less than a month after taking office resulted in a barrage of criticism from governors across Brazil against Jair Bolsonaro regarding his guidelines for tackling the new coronavirus pandemic.
For the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), Bolsonaro is putting the country in an "endless cauldron of intrigue." "Brazil wakes up frightened by the daily crises of attacks on democracy, Congress, the Supreme Court, the press, attacks on ministers of his own government. As you did and continue to do. You did it with Bebbiano, with Santos Cruz, with Sergio Moro, you did it with Luiz Henrique Mandetta and now you're doing it with Nelson Teich. Mr. President, govern, administer your country with balance, peace in your heart, discernment and greatness. Stop the attacks, stop putting the country in an endless cauldron of intrigue. The country needs to be at peace," said Doria.
The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Witzel (PSC), used his Twitter page to state that no one will be able to "do serious work" with the interference made by Jair Bolsonaro in the ministries and the Federal Police. "Governors and mayors need to lead the pandemic crisis, not you, Mr. President," Witzel posted. He also added that Teich "is yet another hero who has left us."
The governor of Maranhão, Flavio Dino (PCdoB), said on social media that "the chaos Bolsonaro creates is unique on the planet. I hope that the institutions will judge as soon as possible the production of so many disasters, among which is the dismissal of TWO Ministers of Health in the midst of a gigantic health crisis. Brazil deserves serious and competent management."
For the governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana (PT), Teich's resignation is "an affront to the country." "The departure of the second Minister of Health in less than a month brings enormous insecurity and concern. It is unacceptable that, in the face of the very serious health crisis we are experiencing, the focus of the Federal Government continues to be on political and ideological discussions. This is an affront to the country," he posted.
The governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande (PSB), observed that "the departure of yet another health minister in the midst of a pandemic shows how adrift we are in the federal government's response to the crisis. Either the President lets the ministry act according to WHO guidelines, or we will lose more and more Brazilians."
