Roberto Jefferson: 'I have no regrets'

247 – Sentenced to seven years and 14 days in prison in Criminal Action 470, the whistleblower of the so-called 'mensalão', former federal deputy Roberto Jefferson, stated, this Thursday (14), that he has no regrets. "No (I have no regrets), everything is fine. I do not rejoice, I am a convicted defendant like all the others, let's wait for destiny to be fulfilled," he wrote on his Twitter account.

On Wednesday, the full Supreme Court ordered the immediate imprisonment of those convicted in the case. Despite this, Jefferson stated that he believes in the chance of better politics in the future. "I would be lying if I said I was satisfied; however, I am comforted by the belief that politics can be better in the future," he said. According to him, the 'mensalão' trial was "the biggest scandal I have ever witnessed in the Planalto Central since I became a congressman."

Given that the former congressman was the whistleblower in the scheme in 2005, his defense requested judicial pardon, a request denied by the Supreme Court. Furthermore, the Supreme Court yesterday denied the conversion of his sentence to house arrest, an appeal made by the former congressman's lawyers due to his health problems. Roberto Jefferson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
