The rapporteur for the amnesty bill admits he may review the project after US sanctions against Moraes' wife.
Paulinho da Força says that measures against Moraes' wife could delay the vote on the proposal in the Chamber of Deputies.
247 - Congressman Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), rapporteur of the amnesty bill in the Chamber of Deputies, acknowledged this Monday (22) that the new sanctions imposed by the United States directly affected the processing of the proposal. The information was published by O Globo.
The government of current US President Donald Trump announced the inclusion of lawyer Viviane Barci de Moraes, wife of Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes, on the list of those sanctioned by the Magnitsky Act. The package also affects Viviane's law firm and the company Lex Institutos Jurídicos, linked to the couple, which owns properties valued at over R$ 20 million.
"We have to rethink everything again," said Paulinho, admitting that the vote on the bill, previously scheduled for this week, may be postponed due to the new political landscape.
Impact on the Supreme Court
Washington's measures were seen as an attack on the Supreme Federal Court (STF) precisely at a time when Moraes and Gilmar Mendes had already signaled support for an agreement to reduce the sentences of those convicted for the coup attempts of January 8, 2023. This understanding included the release of prisoners and the review of the most severe sentences, including that of former President Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years in prison for leading the coup attempt.
Behind the scenes of the negotiation
Paulinho's nomination for rapporteur was made by the Speaker of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), with the approval of Moraes and Gilmar. Both, along with Dias Toffoli, participated in discussions that sought to prevent the approval of a broad amnesty, advocated by Bolsonaro supporters, which could fully pardon Bolsonaro.
The text under analysis is authored by Marcelo Crivella (Republicanos-RJ), which proposed amnesty for those involved in coup attempts since October 2022, but without including Bolsonaro and those convicted by the Supreme Federal Court. However, the inclusion of these sanctions reopens the debate on the terms of the proposal and could delay its final decision in the Chamber of Deputies.
