SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The number of road blockades or road closures across the country resulting from actions by Bolsonaro supporters unhappy with the outcome of Sunday's election has fallen to less than half compared to the beginning of the day, according to data released by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) on Thursday afternoon.

The number of pro-coup demonstrations has decreased to 32 across seven states, according to a report released by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) around 16 PM. Around 10 AM, the number of roadblocks and blockades totaled 73.

The protesters lost heart after President Jair Bolsonaro made a statement on Wednesday night calling for the highways to be unblocked, despite claiming that other protests against the election results are "part of the democratic process."

Bolsonaro waited three days to make the request while the country had to deal with hundreds of roadblocks organized by Bolsonaro supporters after the confirmation of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's (PT) victory in Sunday's election.

Bolsonaro did not explicitly acknowledge his electoral defeat to Lula and made his first statement about the election 44 hours after the Workers' Party candidate was confirmed for a third term as President of the Republic.

Despite Bolsonaro's stance, in which he said that the coup-like movements of his supporters are the result of indignation and a feeling of injustice with the way the electoral process unfolded, the government transition work began this Thursday.

Despite the significant drop in demonstrations, Mato Grosso, one of the main centers of the movement advocating a military coup, had the highest number of roadblocks, with 9, according to PRF data. However, the volume of protests was much lower than the 24 reported earlier.

Santa Catarina, another important Bolsonaro stronghold that earlier recorded 16 road closures and 11 blockades, showed 5 points of disruption on the state's roads according to the new PRF (Federal Highway Police) report. According to the criteria adopted by the PRF, blockades occur when traffic is completely impeded, and closures occur when there is a partial interruption in the flow of vehicles.

In a ruling this Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes gave the Director-General of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), Silvinei Vasquez, 48 hours to present a detailed report of all fines issued by the agency, identifying the vehicles and individuals cited.

The decision was made as part of a lawsuit that had asked the Supreme Federal Court to clear all federal highways occupied by Bolsonaro supporters.

According to press reports, as of the previous day, the total number of citations issued was 1.992, amounting to 18 million reais in fines.

In addition to Mato Grosso and Santa Catarina, Rondônia (8) and Pará (6) recorded the highest numbers of road blockades and road closures, according to PRF figures.

In addition to the coup-mongering acts on the roads, Bolsonaro supporters went to the gates of Army units in cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo on Wednesday, All Souls' Day, to demand intervention by the Armed Forces, which is illegal.
