PP, PL, and Republicans close ranks to support Rogério Marinho in his bid for the presidency of the Senate.
In his speech, Marinho said that it is necessary to "moderate the greed, the excesses of those who are coming to power."
247 - The PP, PL and Republicans decided this Saturday morning (28), in Brasília, to formalize the bloc of support for the election of Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) to the presidency of the Federal Senate.
The meeting included Bolsonaro-aligned senators such as Carlos Portinho, Tereza Cristina, and Flávio Bolsonaro, who, along with Rogério Marinho, spoke at a press conference about the bloc.
Valdemar Costa Neto (PL), president of the PL party, also participated in the meeting, as did Marcos Pereira (Republicanos) and Ciro Nogueira (PP).
In his speech, Marinho praised what he called the "legacy" of the governments of Michel Temer (MDB) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in actions, mainly in the economic sphere. "Six years of transformations and modernizations, and part of that legacy is at risk," said Marinho, who was one of the main architects of the labor and pension reforms.
He then said that it is necessary to "moderate the greed, the excesses of those who are coming to power and who, in their eagerness to impose their agenda, want to destroy what has been done virtuously for Brazil."
Speaking as a candidate, Marinho said that if elected on February 1st, he will sign the opening of a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate the January 8th attacks.
The narrative from Bolsonaro's base in the Senate is that Marinho's election will "balance the powers," in the face of what they call "abuses" against those who attacked democracy, standing up to the Lula government.
Another agenda item for Bolsonaro supporters is to push for the impeachment of ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). Marinho defended promoting institutional dialogue and said that "impeachment is an instrument that exists in the Constitution, but I do not intend to sit in the chair and initiate a process of revenge. Rather, I intend to sit down with each of the branches of government for dialogue."
Marinho is vying for leadership of the Senate with the current president, Rodrigo Pacheco, of the PSD party. The PL party has 14 senators, the PP party 6, and the Republicanos party 4, totaling 24 of the 88 senators.
