PL outlines electoral strategy for 2026 focusing on amendments and the Health Committee.
With half of the R$ 11,5 billion allocated for amendments reserved for the health committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, the party seeks to strengthen its municipal base.
247 - The Liberal Party (PL), led by Valdemar Costa Neto, has focused on a strategy of strengthening its local base, aiming for the 2026 general elections. The priority given to the committees of the Chamber of Deputies, especially the Health Committee, reflects a movement that goes beyond ideological and social issues. According to the newspaper The GlobeThe Liberal Party (PL), with the largest bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, composed of 92 representatives, secured the right to choose the first two committees of its preference, and the Health Committee, with its enormous potential for distributing amendments, stands out as its main focus.
With a total of R$ 11,5 billion allocated to parliamentary amendments in the 2025 budget, half of which is reserved for the health committees of the Chamber and the Senate, the PL sees the committee as an asset to secure support from mayors and expand its local political strength. The distribution of amendments could be a strategic advantage for the party, since the exact amounts are still being defined in the Annual Budget Law (LOA), which will be voted on after Carnival.
In addition to the Health Committee, the PL maintains the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) as one of its priorities, despite an agreement between parties regarding the rotation of leadership of this committee, established since the administration of Arthur Lira (PP-AL). The leader of the PL, Sostenes Cavalcante (RJ), argues that the committee should once again be led by the party, claiming that they have a "right" to the position. He states that he will wage a political "fight" to secure the CCJ, one of the most influential committees in the House.
Following the initial choices made by the PL party, the PT, with its 80-member caucus, will have preference in choosing committees before the PL party takes its turn again. Besides the Health Committee and the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), the PL is eyeing other key committees, such as the Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee (Creden) and the Public Security Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. In the Senate, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) will also lead the Public Security Committee, following an agreement with Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), the Senate president.
