The Liberal Party (PL) wants to increase pressure to expedite the processing of the bill that grants amnesty to those convicted for the coup attempts of January 8, 2023. According to a report by... CNN BrazilThe party intends to submit an urgent request to the Chamber of Deputies as soon as the Speaker of the House, Deputy Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), returns from his trip to Asia with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“We are expanding the number of parties that are signing. Out of loyalty to President Hugo Motta, who is our ally in the amnesty, I will present it as soon as he returns from Asia,” said Congressman Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), leader of the PL in the Chamber.

Hugo Motta traveled to Japan and Vietnam last Saturday (22), accompanying President Lula, ministers and parliamentarians on an official mission. While he is out of the country, the decision on the proposal's progress will remain on hold. The project was initially under analysis by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), but its processing can be accelerated through the request for urgency.

According to Sóstenes, the party has already received positive signals from nine other parties and is now seeking the support of Solidariedade, led by Paulinho da Força (SP), who has adopted a critical tone towards the Lula government. Among the parties that would be willing to sign the urgency request are PSDB and Podemos.

Direct lobbying efforts to garner support from other political parties have been led by Jair Bolsonaro, the main figure in the PL party and a direct stakeholder in the measure. The amnesty, if approved, could benefit supporters of the former president who participated in the invasion of the Three Powers headquarters in Brasília.

Motta's predecessor as Speaker of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), even announced the creation of a special commission to discuss the amnesty bill, which would have delayed the debate. However, the commission was never established.
