247 - The leadership of the Liberal Party (PL) has begun a concentrated effort to garner support for the controversial amnesty bill for those involved in the coup attempts of January 8th. According to the journalist's column. Paulo CappelliAccording to Metrópoles, in a strategy orchestrated by Jair Bolsonaro, the party's president, Valdemar Costa Neto, and congress members are trying to secure the 257 votes needed to bring the proposal to the Chamber's leadership committee before Carnival.

The main target of the PL leadership's courting are the presidents of the main centrist parties: Gilberto Kassab (PSD), Marcos Pereira (Republicanos), and Antônio Rueda (União Brasil). Bolsonaro's party believes that at least half of the centrist blocs should support the amnesty, given that these parties maintain pro-Bolsonaro groups that ignore the fact that allies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) control ministries. The PL wants to exploit these groups, without forgetting to appeal to independent deputies.

The party also hopes to count on the support of the PP, led by Ciro Nogueira, former Chief of Staff in the Bolsonaro government. The Progressistas party, which has remained aligned with the opposition during Lula's government, is seen as an important ally, since Nogueira is considered a possible vice-presidential candidate in a future Bolsonaro election.

By combining their forces, PP, União Brasil, PSD, and Republicanos have 197 representatives. Based on PL's estimate of securing at least half of these seats, the party would gain an additional 98 votes. However, this number is still not enough to pass the bill.

Therefore, the PL leadership may be forced to seek support from smaller parties as well, such as MDB and PRD, which together have 12 representatives, in addition to seeking alignment with Avante, a party that could also be decisive in securing the necessary votes.
