247 – The press office of the government of Goiás, led by PSDB member Marconi Perillo, denied that the governor knows the businessman mentioned in recordings by illegal gambling operator Carlos Cachoeira, according to a report in Época magazine (read moreIn a statement, the press office defends that Perillo "does not know and has never met the people mentioned" by Cachoeira. According to the illegal gambling operator, the businessman allegedly bought a plane together with the politician. Read below the full statement with the position of the Goiás government:

Regarding the report claiming that the Governor of the State of Goiás, Marconi Perillo, is a partner in a Cessna aircraft, we would like to state that:

1 - The information that the governor of Goiás, Marconi Perillo, is a co-owner of such an aircraft is completely unfounded and absurd. The governor of Goiás does not know, nor has he ever met, the people mentioned by Mr. Carlos Augusto de Almeida Ramos in the wiretaps intercepted by the Federal Police (PF) during the investigation of Operation Monte Carlo;

2 - The way the report was written and presented to the public is frivolous, not to say irresponsible. Besides relegating the clarifications provided by the governor of Goiás to the background, the report treats the statements of those under investigation as true, even though they are the actual targets of the wiretaps and the investigation of Operation Monte Carlo.

3 - It is known that the governor of Goiás, Marconi Perillo, is not a target of the Monte Carlo investigation. The way the report was edited can be considered a disservice to good journalistic practice insofar as it gives credence to the falsehoods uttered by those under investigation, to the detriment of the prompt clarifications from reputable people cited by the head of the aforementioned gang. In this way, the report leads readers and internet users to conclude that those under investigation are on the side of truth, a fact that the Government of Goiás regrets, repudiates, and considers an affront and a disrespect to the population of our State.

4 - Once again, what the broadcast and transcript of the wiretapped phone conversations show is that there is no concrete fact linking Governor Marconi Perillo to the people investigated in Operation Monte Carlo, demonstrating, once again, that his statements are nothing more than bravado and baseless delusion. The proper clarification of the facts, with the trial of those responsible, will certainly restore the truth.

5 - Finally, the Government of Goiás and Governor Marconi Perillo reaffirm their support for the investigations launched by Operation Monte Carlo and remain open to all necessary clarifications, in a clean and transparent manner. Furthermore, they expect that the information resulting from the investigation will be treated impartially, free from any manipulation, distinguishing the accused from law-abiding citizens.
