247 - Applications for firearm registration fell by almost 60% in January of this year compared to January 2022, the Ministry of Justice reported this Thursday (16).

According to the ministry, the Federal Police (PF) received 3.888 requests for gun registration last month, compared to 9.719 in January 2022.

On Wednesday (15), the minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes suspended all lower court proceedings discussing the legality of the Lula government decree that imposed greater control over public access to firearms.

Decisions already made or that may be published against the measure issued by Lula will be immediately rendered ineffective, the minister determined.

The decree, among other points, requires a re-registration, by the end of March, of all weapons sold in the country from May 2019 onwards.

The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, stated that 66.488 permitted firearms and 2.464 restricted firearms in the possession of CACs (Collectors, Shooters, and Hunters) have already been re-registered this year.

“Our expectation is that this number will grow in the coming days, since some people were under the illusion that President Lula's decree would be overturned, revoked, or annulled, and that is not the case at all. So, we want to make it clear that the deadline (for re-registration) is running, and the Supreme Court's decision confirms the path that was decided by the President of the Republic,” Dino celebrated.

"We can see that the decree, in addition to being compatible with the law (as decided by Minister Gilmar Mendes), is producing positive effects, in the sense of achieving what we seek: responsible control of firearms in Brazil," the minister stated.
