Agency Brazil The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) released a statement expressing its “deep regret” over the Supreme Federal Court's (STF) decision to authorize the termination of pregnancy in cases of fetuses with anencephaly. According to the organization, allowing abortion in these cases is “discarding a fragile and defenseless human being.”

"The pregnancy of a child with anencephaly is a tragedy for the family, especially for the mother. To consider abortion as the best option for the woman, besides denying the inviolable right of the unborn child, ignores the negative psychological consequences for the mother. The State and society must offer the pregnant woman support and protection," the statement says.

By a vote of 8 to 2, the STF decided yesterday (12) to authorize women to terminate pregnancies in cases of anencephalic fetuses, without the practice constituting a criminal abortion. During two days of trial, the majority of STF ministers considered the action brought by the National Confederation of Health Workers (CNTS), which had been pending in the Court since 2004, to be valid.

The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Cezar Peluso, and Justice Ricardo Lewandowski voted against the interruption of pregnancy. Justice Dias Toffoli recused himself from voting because he had previously expressed support for the interruption when he was Attorney General of the Union.
