247 - The opposition filed a request in the Chamber of Deputies this Thursday (5) to open a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the causes, consequences and those responsible for the "disruption of the electricity sector from 2004 onwards".
The opposition has gathered support from 176 of the 513 deputies for the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) into the electricity sector. The signatures still need to be verified – at least 171 are required. For the CPI to be viable, it will also be necessary to have a so-called "specific fact" that justifies the investigation.
The justification for the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the electricity sector is the blackouts and the policy for setting energy tariffs. The idea is to put pressure on President Dilma Rousseff, who was Minister of Mines and Energy in Lula's government, considered by the opposition to be "the main manager of the sector in recent years."
The final decision on its creation will rest with the Speaker of the House, Eduardo Cunha. The PMDB party has controlled the Ministry of Mines and Energy and has had a strong influence on state-owned companies in the sector in recent years.
