Opposition pressures Hugo Motta to vote on Bolsonaro's agenda after occupying the plenary.

A meeting of leaders is expected to determine the fate of the proposed constitutional amendment on privileged jurisdiction and the amnesty bill, which are facing resistance from the government's base.

247 - A week after the occupation of the Chamber's plenary by Bolsonaro-supporting parliamentarians, who were protesting against Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) house arrest, the meeting of party leaders this Tuesday (12) promises to be marked by strong pressure from the opposition on the president of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB). The objective, according to the column RadarAccording to Veja magazine, the goal is to accelerate the voting on proposals advocated by the former president's allies.

The meeting, scheduled for 10 am, takes place after the rebellion that paralyzed work upon the return from recess. The crisis was averted when former Speaker of the House Arthur Lira (PP-AL) intervened and, according to reports, brokered a compromise with leaders for Motta to put the PEC (Proposed Constitutional Amendment) that eliminates privileged jurisdiction and the Amnesty Bill on the agenda, provided there was a majority to consider the texts.

Motta, however, denies the existence of any agreement. In an interview with the Ponto de Vista program on TV VEJA+, on Monday (11), the president of the Chamber classified the alleged negotiation as “narrative” and reiterated that he will only take proposals to the plenary that have the support of the majority.

The opposition arrives at the meeting with the goal of securing this support and enabling the voting on the matters. Motta's allies consider it possible that the PEC (Proposed Constitutional Amendment) to end privileged jurisdiction will move forward, but they believe that the Amnesty Bill faces greater resistance. According to this faction, it is still necessary to find a formulation that does not appear to legitimize or "sponsor" the pardon of those involved in the coup attempts of January 8, 2023.

Members of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's (PT) base are already planning to act against Bolsonaro's agenda and try to convince other leaders to prioritize the vote on income tax reform. They also intend to reinforce their defense of punishing the deputies who participated in the previous week's mutiny.
