A rebellion that began in two neighboring prisons this Saturday (14) in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, resulted in the death of at least 10 prisoners. Authorities reported that the number of fatalities could increase.
The riot at the Alcaçuz and Rogério Coutinho Madruga prisons began around 16:30 PM after a confrontation between members of the PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital) and the Sindicato do Crime. "The police have already entered, we are regaining control, but we know the situation is critical. The prison is very large, we haven't been able to reach all areas yet," the state government's Secretary of Justice and Citizenship, Wallber Virgolino, told Globo in the early evening.
The rebellion in Rio Grande do Norte is yet another chapter in the Brazilian prison crisis, which this year alone has already left nearly 100 dead in Amazonas and Roraima.
