In Marajó, Lula promises investments in water and energy and a federal university.
President announces resumption of stalled construction projects and advocates for expanded access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) visited the municipality of Breves, in the Marajó archipelago, in Pará, this Thursday (2), where he participated in inaugurations and announced new measures aimed at the population of the region. The event marked the delivery of school units and the resumption of stalled works, with a strong emphasis on investments in education, water and energy.
The agenda included the inauguration of two schools in Breves and one in Melgaço, in addition to the signing of service orders for seven more educational projects. The package is part of the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program) and the National Pact for the Resumption of Basic Education Works, which allocate R$ 34,7 million to the archipelago, plus another R$ 126,9 million for more than 100 reactivated projects.
Commitments to energy and drinking water
During his speech, Lula highlighted the urgency of bringing electricity to all homes in Marajó. "I want to eliminate any house that doesn't have electricity. It's unacceptable that people are still living by lamplight," the president stated, urging mayors to conduct surveys to identify households without access to the grid.
The Chief Executive also demanded swift action from the concessionaire responsible for the water supply. "Those who are thirsty are in a hurry. Water for human survival is more important than food," said Lula, alongside Governor Helder Barbalho (MDB).
Federal university and expansion of healthcare
Another highlight of the presidential speech was the announcement of support for the creation of a federal university in the archipelago. "If you, Camilo, as Minister of Education, after talking with our colleague Helder, come to the conclusion that we need to create a federal university here in Marajó, we will do it," declared Lula, referring to Minister Camilo Santana.
In the area of health, the president mentioned the need to expand the network of specialized care. He cited the local demand for a hospital with hemodialysis services and linked the initiative to the "Now There Are Specialists" program, which aims to reduce waiting times for medical appointments. "Our goal is that no appointment takes more than 30 days," he said.
Resumption of educational projects
Lula's visit also reinforced the progress of the National Pact for the Resumption of Basic Education Works. In Marajó alone, 115 projects are included, encompassing daycare centers, schools, covered sports courts, and expansion projects. In total, the investments are expected to benefit approximately 24,6 students.
Breves leads the list of municipalities with the highest number of completed projects, totaling 20. Curralinho comes next, with ten inaugurations, followed by Portel (seven). Other municipalities, such as Bagre, celebrated the first daycare center in their history, delivered this year.
Regional impact and national expansion
The Marajó archipelago was designated in 2024 as a priority region for educational monitoring by the Ministry of Education, within the FNDE Chegando Junto program. This initiative guarantees technical support and strengthens areas such as school meals, transportation, and professional development for education professionals.
In addition to Pará, Amapá was included in the first phase of the project, and, starting in 2025, Maranhão and Roraima will also be included. The goal is to expand educational infrastructure in areas historically marked by low levels of social development.
With his visit to Marajó, Lula reinforced the message that resuming stalled projects and investing in essential services are priorities for the federal government to reduce historical inequalities in the Amazon region.
