Gilmar: a colonel in the Supreme Court

The injunction granted by Minister Gilmar Mendes, aimed at blocking the vote on new political parties, is conclusive proof: Gilmar is a provocateur, firmly committed to generating institutional crises.

Regardless of the legitimacy of the vote, Gilmar's procedure is unacceptable: an injunction against a law that hasn't even been voted on.

There is a climate of war between Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Attorney General's Office, with this absurd proposed constitutional amendment from Congress to limit the powers of the Supreme Court. On the other hand, there is a history of the Supreme Court overstepping its own power, ever since the Mensalão trial.

On both sides, responsible individuals, politicians, jurists, analysts, and magistrates are seeking to establish a climate of harmony and institutional maturity.

But Gilmar doesn't have the stature of a Supreme Court Justice. His decision today is merely aimed at adding fuel to the fire, betting on a permanent crisis.

He's irresponsible.
