Múcio says that releasing "innocent" individuals involved in the January 8th coup would help "pacify the country."

On the Roda Viva program, the minister was ambiguous, stating that it will only become clear whether there was a coup "if the accusations appear in the investigations."

247 - Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro defended on Monday (10), on the Roda Viva program on TV Cultura, different penalties for the demonstrators involved in the coup attempt of January 8. For him, releasing innocent people or those who had less involvement would help to "pacify the country".

Although he used the word "coup," Múcio avoided stating definitively that there had been an attempted coup, saying that this will only become clear "if the investigations reveal the accusations."

Referring to the position of the Armed Forces, Múcio said that they expect those responsible for the anti-democratic acts of January 8, 2023, to be duly identified and punished. According to him, it is necessary to differentiate the penalties between the organizers and the participants who vandalized the headquarters of the Three Branches of Government in Brasília.

For Múcio, it is crucial that the Justice system distinguishes between the different levels of involvement in the events that culminated in the invasion and destruction of public buildings.

Furthermore, Múcio criticized an institutional video produced by the Navy in December, in which the corporation mocked the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, by questioning the "privileges" of the military. The minister described the recording as "imprudent" and "inopportune," especially given the policy of containing expenses adopted by the federal government, which includes cuts in the Armed Forces budget.

The video produced by the Navy highlights the tensions between the federal government and sectors of the Armed Forces, especially regarding reforms that affect military benefits and spending.

Investigations into the attempted coup of January 8th are ongoing, and the government expects those responsible to be judged according to the severity of their actions.
