Former governor of Amazonas, Amazonino Mendes, dies.

Amazonino, 83, had been hospitalized at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo since December 25th due to respiratory problems. The politician from the Cidadania party was governor of Amazonas four times.

247 - Former Amazonas governor Amazonino Mendes passed away this Sunday (12), aged 83. informs the G1 portal.

Amazonino had been hospitalized at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo since December 25th due to respiratory problems.

He had already been hospitalized in November to treat pneumonia and a diverticulitis crisis, even spending time in the ICU. The former governor was then discharged on December 6th, but returned for a medical consultation on the 18th due to a worsening of his respiratory condition. On the 25th, he needed to be hospitalized and remained so until today, when he succumbed and passed away.

Amazonino was governor of Amazonas four times. In the 2022 general elections, the Cidadania party politician ran for a fifth term. During the campaign, the former governor had to reduce his schedule and avoid large mobilizations in the state due to his advanced age and declining health in recent years.

The politician leaves behind three children. According to G1, "there is no information yet regarding the wake and the transfer of the body to Manaus, where the politician is expected to be waked and buried."
