Moraes emphasizes that the Supreme Court will not tolerate coup plotters: 'Impunity, omission, and cowardice have never worked out well.'
"The path of impunity, omission, and cowardice may seem easier, but that is false," stated the Supreme Court Justice.
247 - Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), delivered a speech, this Friday (22), against authoritarianism, warning that the Judiciary will not treat those who attacked democracy with "impunity, omission and cowardice".
"Brazil, unfortunately, has a history of coups and, for 37 years, a democratic state governed by the rule of law and institutional stability. Not tranquility, but important instruments to guarantee this normality," Moraes said at a forum of the Lide group in Rio de Janeiro.
"Impunity, omission, and cowardice may seem easier, but that's false. They have never worked in the history of any country in the world," he stated, arguing that the Judiciary, to be independent, cannot "be cowardly."
"Those who attempt [to attack democracy] will be held accountable," said Moraes, warning that the attacks may continue, but that the profession of judge demands great courage in the face of internal and external pressures.
The minister stated that the main challenge for Brazil is "security: institutional, legal, and public."
