Ministry of Human Rights finds Damares' bunker with weapons safe and soundproofing.
The former minister's team claims the room was important to "protect her life."
247 - Workers at the Ministry of Human Rights discovered a bunker near the office that, until 2022, was occupied by Damares Alves. The room has an electronic lock, reinforced walls, soundproofing, and a safe for storing weapons. informs Guilherme Amado's column on the Metrópoles website.
According to documents obtained through the Access to Information Law, the renovation of the site cost R$17 and was requested in April 2021 by federal highway patrol officer Marco Aurélio Baierle, who was responsible for the security of the former minister.
The police officer listed seven conditions for the room's renovation, including soundproofing, a biometric digital lock, independent air conditioning, a safe for storing weapons and documents, and a paper shredder. The work was approved the following month, but it took nine months to complete. During this period, the officer requested that the soundproofing be done in such a way that no sound could be heard outside the room, based on "speech level".
In February 2022, Baierle attested to having received the renovated room as requested. Subsequently, he complained that the soundproofing was inadequate, stating that "external sounds are audible inside the room, which does not meet the requirements." However, the Logistics department claimed that the service was performed within the ministry's capabilities and in accordance with what had been requested.
When contacted by the column, Damares Alves' team responded that the room was important to 'protect her life'. "Damares Alves had police protection because she had been receiving threats to her life since the beginning of her tenure as head of the ministry. The aforementioned room was adapted, in compliance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Justice, so that federal police officers could store their security equipment, as well as carry out the necessary activities to ensure the proper security of the then minister," they stated.
