'Activists are wrong to criticize evangelicals in politics,' says José Dirceu.
The former minister criticized the 'conservative evangelical factions', but stated that his participation in politics should not be questioned.
247 - Former minister José Dirceu (PT) criticized, this Saturday (29), the stance of PT militants regarding the entry of evangelical leaders into politics, reports the newspaper The GlobeDuring a party plenary session in Brasília, Dirceu said it would be a mistake to question the group's presence in political circles, since the PT itself has its origins in the Catholic Church.
“We were wrong when we criticized the presence of evangelicals in politics. We were born in churches, in pastoral groups, and we would flee to the church when we were about to be arrested. It was in the churches that we formed our strike committees, our food collection committees,” he said, recalling the founding of the party.
However, the minister also criticized what he called "evangelical factions" linked to conservatism, but said that the group's presence in politics should not be questioned. "We have antagonistic projects because of the conservatism, economic liberalism, and authoritarianism of the evangelical factions, but it's not about religion. It's not because they can't (occupy politics)," explained Dirceu, to applause from those present at the event.
José Dirceu is being considered as a candidate for the Chamber of Deputies in the 2026 elections. He has intensified his political agenda over the past few months and intends to launch the second volume of a book with his memoirs between May and June of this year.
