247 - Federal congresswoman Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), currently imprisoned in Italy, continues to have her office in Brasília fully operational — and with increased public spending. According to information from CNN BrazilHowever, the congresswoman's expenses have increased in recent months, even after she formally stepped down from her position.

In May, the month Zambelli requested leave from her mandate on the 29th, R$ 127,8 was spent from the budget allocated to pay the salaries of up to 25 parliamentary secretaries. The following month, June, expenses fell to R$ 107, but gradually increased again: R$ 89 in July and August, and R$ 103 in September. The congresswoman's office maintains 12 active employees, ten of whom were hired between September and October of this year. The report attempts to contact the congresswoman's press office to clarify the reason for these hirings.

Zambelli's leave of absence ended on October 5th, and since then, the congresswoman has been accumulating absences from sessions of the Chamber of Deputies. This situation could lead to the loss of her mandate, as she is also the target of a request for expulsion currently under analysis by the House Ethics Committee.

In May of this year, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) sentenced the congresswoman to 10 years in prison for the crimes of hacking into the systems of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and inserting false documents, which occurred in 2023.

Petition to the Inter-American Court

Detained since July 29th in the Rebbibia women's prison in Rome, Zambelli is now attempting to leave prison. Her defense, led by lawyer Fabio Pagnozzi, has filed a petition with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, arguing that the conviction process violated basic judicial guarantees.

Pagnozzi also attached to the request medical reports attesting that the congresswoman suffers from fibromyalgia, cardiovascular disease, and severe depression. According to the lawyer, the detention conditions in the Italian prison do not offer adequate medical treatment, which, in his assessment, constitutes a breach of international agreements.
