Less than a week after the Supreme Court's decision, racism at UFMG.

A storefront across from the University campus in Belo Horizonte was found vandalized with the phrase: "UFMG will turn black"; last Thursday, the Supreme Court justices unanimously considered the quota system in public universities constitutional.

Minas 247 - Less than a week after the Supreme Federal Court (STF) ruled that the racial quota system for public universities is constitutional, the first manifestation of racism linking the two events has emerged.

It happened at the entrance of a motorcycle dealership across from the UFMG campus in the northern part of Belo Horizonte. Unidentified individuals spray-painted the following message at the location: "UFMG is going to be black," a very likely reference to the Supreme Court's decision.

Taken on April 26th, the decision was unanimous among the Supreme Court justices: ten votes in favor and none against. They considered constitutional the system already adopted in some universities, which grants quotas for the admission of Afro-descendant students to public schools. In announcing the result, the Court's president, Ayres Brito, stated: "Brazil has one more reason to look in the mirror of history and not blush with shame."

Fortunately, UFMG acted quickly and stated that it repudiates any type of discrimination. The case will be forwarded to the University Council, the highest authority of the institution.
