Mauro Cid named 9 of the 40 indicted for attempted coup in his first testimony.
Former aide names 20 people and details the division among allies of the former president in the context of the post-election crisis.
247 - Former aide to Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Mauro Cid, cited 9 of the 40 people indicted for participation in an attempted coup d'état in his first testimony as part of a plea bargain, reports... Folha de S. PaulCid mentioned around 20 names in that testimony, but not all of them were indicted in the final report presented by the Federal Police at the end of 2024.
In his initial testimony, the military officer already pointed to the involvement of General Walter Braga Netto, a former minister in the Bolsonaro government, who was arrested in late 2024 while attempting to obtain information about Cid's plea bargain. Also mentioned were the former Army commander, Paulo Sergio Nogueira, and Mário Fernandes, identified as one of the main organizers of the coup plot.
Another name mentioned was that of Bolsonaro's former advisor Filipe Martins and the former Navy commander Admiral Almir Garnier, who allegedly placed troops at the disposal of the coup plotters. The president of the PL party, Valdemar Costa Neto, and Major Angelo Denicoli also appear in the testimony.
Cid described Bolsonaro's allies as divided into three distinct groups. The first group, more conservative, was made up of political figures such as Senator Ciro Nogueira and former Air Force commander Baptista Júnior, who pressured the former president to demobilize supporters who were calling for intervention by the Armed Forces.
The second, more moderate group viewed the attempted coup as an action that could result in more serious consequences for the country, leading many of its members, such as Generals Freire Gomes and Theophilo, to adopt a cautious stance.
Finally, the most radical group, which included figures such as the president of the PL party, Valdemar Costa Neto, and the former Minister of Health, General Eduardo Pazuello, was strongly aligned with the idea of more assertive action. Cid also mentions in his testimony other prominent names such as Michelle Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro, and senators linked to the PL party, such as Magno Malta and Jorge Seif.
