Marco Aurélio says the Supreme Court endorsed "institutional mockery"

A Supreme Court Justice criticized what he called the "famous Brazilian way" in the Court's decision to keep Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL) as president of the Senate and remove him from the line of succession to the Presidency of the Republic; "I think we could have moved forward, as I said in my vote yesterday, and we ended up endorsing a true institutional mockery. This is in the vote and, by resorting to the famous Brazilian way with the decision, the Supreme Court, in my view, as an institution, the last bastion of citizenship, has come out worn down," he said.

247 - Supreme Court Justice Marco Aurélio Mello criticized what he called the "famous Brazilian way" in the Court's decision to keep Senator Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL) as president of the Senate, despite removing him from the line of succession to the Presidency of the Republic.

"I think we could have moved forward, as I said in yesterday's vote, and we ended up endorsing a real institutional mockery. This is in the vote, and by resorting to the famous Brazilian way of doing things with the decision, the Supreme Court, in my view, as an institution, the last bastion of citizenship, has come out worn down. Now the Senate has also come out worn down (...). I don't look favorably on the court's solution," said Mello in an interview with Rádio Jovem Pan.

This week, he granted, through a preliminary injunction, a lawsuit filed by the Sustainability Network that resulted in Renan's removal from the presidency of the Senate. This Wednesday, however, the Senate plenary decided, by six votes to three, to keep Renan in office, but without him remaining in the succession race.

"We have an absurd legal situation that could be repeated in numerous cases. This is terrible in terms of legal certainty," he emphasized.
