247 - Former President Lula (PT) meets this Wednesday (21) with representatives of the United States Department of State, reports CNN Brazil.

The meeting will be attended by the chargé d'affaires of the United States Embassy in Brazil, Douglas Koneff, currently the highest-ranking US government official in Brazil.

Former Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and Senator Jacques Wagner will accompany Lula.

"The meeting has been handled with discretion by both sides. The idea was that it would have already taken place. Then, it was agreed that it would occur between the first and second rounds. And in the last negotiation, the agreement was that it would only occur after the end of the elections. But as polls began to indicate the real possibility of the election ending in the first round, both sides assessed that it would be better for the meeting to take place as soon as possible. The plan is for them to meet in São Paulo, at the headquarters of the Lula Institute," the report says.

The US government wants to ensure that it will respect the election results and plans to discuss a bilateral agenda, including environmental issues.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Brazil said: "As a matter of practice, U.S. diplomats from the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Brazil regularly meet privately with political parties and candidates. We see this as a valuable opportunity for the U.S. government to hear perspectives on current events and political opinions on issues of mutual interest. We plan to continue this effort to meet with all major presidential candidates in the October elections."

"The Embassy leadership has already invited all the main presidential candidates, without setting a priority, in order to discuss their views on bilateral relations."

Some have already accepted, and we are awaiting confirmation from other candidates."
