247 - Brazil will annually celebrate the National Day of Traditions of African Roots and Candomblé Nations on March 21, as sanctioned by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

On the same date, the International Day against Racial Discrimination is commemorated. The date was chosen by the UN in 1966 in memory of the 69 victims of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa.

According to the rapporteur of the bill that establishes the tribute, Deputy Erika Kokay (PT-DF), it is necessary to protect African roots in order to strengthen democracy.

"Rescuing our ancestry, rescuing what represents the resistance and, at the same time, the persistence and resilience of traditional peoples of African origin is fundamental for the construction of a democracy," said the parliamentarian, according to the Folha de S. Paul

The enactment of Law No. 14.519 was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on January 5th.
