247 - Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signs a letter dated this Wednesday (12), the day of Our Lady of Aparecida, Patron Saint of Brazil, in which he assures Brazilians that “religion is a sacred and fundamental right and that it must be respected by all of us”.

The message is a response to the lies spread by the Bolsonaro campaign that Lula will persecute evangelicals if he is elected president of the Republic or that he will close churches.

The text further states that "our Constitution guarantees that all Brazilians and foreigners living in Brazil are free to choose their religion, practice, and profess their beliefs and faith, whether at home or in public. Our government will be no different. All religions and religious institutions will be respected and treated with dignity, as we have done under previous governments."

Em speech in Belford Roxo (RJ) this TuesdayHe also touched on the subject by recalling that his government never persecuted churches in the past. The former president cited the law on religious freedom and the national day of the March for Jesus.

In the first case, in 2003, the president signed Law 10.825, which defines religious organizations and political parties as legal entities under private law and guarantees freedom for churches to be established. In 2009, the law establishing the National March for Jesus Day was signed into law.
