Lula laments the death of writer Candido Mendes: 'He leaves a legacy of fighting for democracy'

The former president says that the professor “showed the tenacity and courage of a brilliant intellectual who acted in favor of freedom and the issues that afflict everyone.”

247 - Former President Lula (PT) lamented, this Thursday, the 17th, on social media, the death of professor and writer Candido Mendes de Almeida, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL)Candido died on Thursday afternoon, after suffering a pulmonary embolism, in Rio de Janeiro. His body will be cremated this Friday, the 18th.

“Candido Mendes de Almeida leaves a legacy of fighting for democracy, for education, and for the pursuit of a better Brazil and a better world. His actions against the military dictatorship and the creation of IUPERJ are milestones that we will never forget and will always honor,” Lula emphasized.

"Her ability to engage in dialogue with leading figures from around the world demonstrated the tenacity and courage of a brilliant intellectual who acted in the pursuit of freedom and the issues that affect everyone. Always dedicated to the noble activity of learning in order to teach," he continued. "My condolences to Dr. Margareth Dalcomo, her children and grandchildren, friends, and many students," he concluded.
