BRASILIA (Reuters) - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Sunday, in his inauguration speech, that he has no intention of seeking revenge against adversaries, but said that there will be legal consequences for those who disrespect the laws.
"We harbor no desire for revenge against those who attempted to subjugate the nation to their personal and ideological designs, but we will guarantee the rule of law. Those who erred will answer for their mistakes, with full right to defense, within due process of law," said the newly inaugurated president from the podium set up in the Chamber of Deputies' plenary hall.
Lula said he is committed to rebuilding the country's democracy based on respect for the rights of the population.
"I pledge to work alongside the Brazilian people to rebuild the country and create a Brazil for everyone again. Under the winds of redemocratization, we said: dictatorship never again! Today, after the terrible challenge we have overcome, we must say: democracy forever!", he stated.
