247 - President Lula (PT) participated this Monday morning (13) in a ceremony that marked the recreation of the Pró-Catador program. Through the two decrees signed by the president, the government recognizes the leading role of waste pickers in the recycling process.

The first decree signed by Lula establishes the Diogo Sant'ana Pro-Waste Pickers Program for Popular Recycling, a recreation of the former Pro-Waste Picker Program, which was abolished by the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government. The second decree, focusing on recycling activity, revokes Recicla+ and establishes three new instruments: the Recycling Credit Certificate; the General Packaging Structuring and Recycling Certificate; and the Future Mass Credit.

In his speech, the president asked the group to continue holding his government accountable and presenting new demands. “This is the first step on a very long journey that we must take so that you can be transformed into full citizens. This is just the beginning. We have four years for you to hold us accountable, because you know that you can't enter the Presidential Palace under just any government. Your entry means that the Brazilian people are participating in the reconstruction of this country, because it has been dismantled.”

"Congratulations to every male and female waste picker. May you continue fighting. Whatever you need, know that you have a friend here," he concluded.

Participating in the event alongside President Lula were Vice President and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), the First Lady, Janja, former President Dilma Rousseff (PT), and Ministers Fernando Haddad (Finance), Marina Silva (Environment), Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat), Wellington Dias (Development and Social Assistance), and Silvio Almeida (Human Rights).
