Luciana Santos announces millions in funding for Science and Technology: 'government will also increase the number of scholarships'

According to the minister, the new scholarships will benefit "more than 250 students from high school to postgraduate level."

247 - The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, announced this Thursday (16) that investments for scholarships in Brazil - CAPES, CNPq and Bolsa Permanência. According to the head of the ministry, the new scholarships will benefit "more than 250 students from high school to postgraduate studies". 

"This demonstrates our commitment to the development of Brazilian science. We will also expand the availability of scholarships. In 2023, more than 10 new scholarships will be implemented. This is in addition to the R$ 150 million allocated to funding programs by CNPq alone, to strengthen national scientific capacity," he stated. 

According to the minister, the measures are important because the government aims to ensure "the qualification and retention of researchers in Brazil, preventing the brain drain of talent." 

In her speech, Luciana said that the Jair Bolsonaro government "suffocated science, bringing it to the brink of collapse."

Scholarships

Scholarships for master's and doctoral programs will be adjusted by up to 40%. For master's programs, the amounts will increase from R$ 1.500 to R$ 2.100, and for doctoral programs, from R$ 2.200 to R$ 3.100. 

The stipends for postdoctoral fellowships will increase by up to 25%, from R$ 4.100 to R$ 5.200. 

Scholarships for basic education teacher training will be adjusted by 40% to 75%. Currently, the amounts allocated range from R$ 400 to R$ 1.500. In 2023, there will be 125,7 scholarships to prepare teachers.

The Student Support Grant will receive its first adjustment since its creation in 2013. This aid is aimed at students from quilombola communities, indigenous students, those enrolled in the Prouni program, and students in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability enrolled in federal higher education institutions. The percentage increases will vary from 55% to 75%. Currently, the amounts range between R$ 400 and R$ 900. 

High school students participating in scientific initiation programs will benefit. There will be 53.000 scholarships that will increase from R$100 to R$300, a 200% increase.
