PL leader blames Flamengo game and end of the month for failure of Bolsonaro rally.
A demonstration called by the former president on Paulista Avenue drew fewer people than previous events; a survey indicated 12,4 participants.
247 - The demonstration organized by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Sunday (29), on Paulista Avenue, in São Paulo, registered a visibly lower audience than previous protests linked to the right. According to a survey by the Political Debate Monitor of Cebrap, in partnership with the NGO More in Common, around 12,4 people were present at the moment of greatest concentration, at 15:40 pm. The information is from FSP.
The count was made using drone images and artificial intelligence analysis. For comparison, the same method estimated 44,9 people at the April 6th event on the same avenue, and 18,3 at the demonstration in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, on March 16th.
On the sound truck, Bolsonaro's own allies acknowledged the low turnout at the demonstration. In front of the MASP (São Paulo Museum of Art), the crowd didn't even occupy a city block, while on the other side of the avenue, near Peixoto Gomide Street, the group was spread over little more than two blocks.
Federal deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante, leader of the PL party in the Chamber of Deputies, attributed the lower turnout to factors such as the end of the month and the holding of the Club World Cup final between Flamengo and Bayern Munich on the same day.
"I find it interesting that some people say it's less crowded. It's actually the second-to-last day of the month, and our people are always paying for transportation, plus the Uber expenses," the legislator stated.
According to him, the start of the school holiday period may also have discouraged the participation of supporters. Despite this, Cavalcante made a provocative statement to his political opponents: "But I challenge the left to put a third of the number of people on the streets that we did."
The event ended around 16 PM, shortly after Jair Bolsonaro's speech. The demonstration's main focus was defending the former president and criticizing the Judiciary's decisions. Even so, the emptying of Paulista Avenue this Sunday was evident, even among the former president's supporters.
