Lava Jato files new charges against Lula

In addition to the former president, eight other people were indicted, including the former first lady, Marisa Letícia, Marcelo Odebrecht, Antonio Palocci, and Lula's lawyer, Roberto Teixeira; Lula is accused of passive corruption and money laundering; according to investigators, bribe money passed on by Odebrecht was used to purchase land for the construction of the new headquarters of the Lula Institute and a property adjacent to the apartment where the former president lives in São Bernardo do Campo.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The Lava Jato task force filed a new indictment on Thursday against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for corruption and money laundering in a case involving land intended for the Lula Institute and an apartment in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office reported.

According to a statement from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), the bribes paid by Odebrecht in the scheme, allegedly led by the former president, totaled 75 million reais in exchange for the construction company obtaining eight Petrobras contracts. Within this amount, according to the prosecutors, were a plot of land worth 12,5 million reais for the Lula Institute and a penthouse apartment next to Lula's residence valued at 504 reais.
