Robberies resulting in death increase by 58% in Brazil in 7 years.
New data from the Brazilian Public Security Forum Yearbook, to be released this Monday, the 30th, shows that the number of robberies followed by murder rose 57,8% in the country between 2010 and last year, with 2,5 registered cases or seven murders committed during robberies increasing in 19 states, such as Rio and Pará, between 2015 and 2016; for experts, this phenomenon is linked to the economic crisis and the weakening of actions to combat crime.
247 - New data from the 11th Annual Report of the Brazilian Public Security Forum, to be released this Monday, the 30th, shows that the number of robberies followed by murder rose 57,8% in the country between 2010 and last year, when there were 2,5 registered cases, or seven cases per day.
The Forum's analysis, which compiles official figures, is the most relevant in the sector. The organization brings together researchers and police officers to discuss public policies.
In total, there have been 13,8 murders during robberies since 2010. According to experts, the economic crisis coupled with problems in state crime reduction programs – which have lost investment – is one of the factors in understanding these indicators. With the recession, many states experienced a decline in both street policing capacity and investigative capabilities.
Robbery resulting in death is a serious crime punishable under Article 157 of the Penal Code. The prison sentence is 20 to 30 years, the maximum allowed by Brazilian law.
Still, the criminals haven't been discouraged. In Rio, the situation is especially worrying. Pernambuco (where the number of cases jumped from 114 to 167) and Espírito Santo (from 35 to 53) are others that have had significant proportional increases. Pernambuco had a program considered a model in reducing violent deaths, which has lost momentum in recent years.
