Kennedy: Punishment of torturers depends on the Supreme Court.

- With yesterday's decision regarding the Vladimir Herzog case, the IACHR (Inter-American Court of Human Rights) is increasing pressure on the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to review its 2010 decision which stated that the 1979 Amnesty Law prevents the punishment of agents of the 64 military dictatorship who tortured and killed opponents of the regime, reports Kennedy Alencar on his blog.

Kennedy: Punishment of torturers depends on the Supreme Court.

247 - With yesterday's decision regarding the Vladimir Herzog case, the IACHR (Inter-American Court of Human Rights) is increasing pressure on the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to review its 2010 decision that affirmed that the 1979 Amnesty Law prevents the punishment of agents of the 64 military dictatorship who tortured and killed opponents of the regime, reports Kennedy Alencar on his blog. The STF at the time rejected a request from the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association) to prosecute and convict murderers from the dictatorship. There is a legal instrument from the 50s, from the UN, which states that crimes against humanity are imprescriptible. This is what happened in the Herzog case. It is necessary to punish torturers and murderers, as Chile did, which on Tuesday convicted eight reserve military officers for the death of singer Victor Jara in 1973. What the dictatorship did in Brazil was state terrorism. As long as there is no change in the STF's understanding, there will be no punishment for torturers in the country.
