247 - The Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1) has ordered the reinstatement of 1.789 Cuban doctors who were part of the Mais Médicos Program. The request was submitted by the National Association of Medical Professionals Trained in Foreign Higher Education Institutions and Medical Professionals Participating in the Mais Médicos Project for Brazil.

The decision, signed by federal judge Carlos Augusto Pires Brandão, gives the government 10 days to present an implementation plan for hiring the doctors.

It is also established that the contracts of doctors hired in the 20th cycle of the program must be extended for one year. The professionals hired in that phase were excluded from the program by a decision of the Cuban government, after the country left the program in November 2018 and ordered the doctors' return.

The magistrate also cites the public health emergency in the Yanomami indigenous territory in Roraima. “There is another fact that recommends this urgent judicial measure. The More Doctors for Brazil Program allows for the implementation of public health actions to combat the health crisis that has taken hold in the Yanomami indigenous region. There is a declared state of public health emergency, decreed through the Ministry of Health,” said the judge.
