Italian court upholds ruling against Carla Zambelli's release.
A pro-Bolsonaro congresswoman is seeking house arrest in Rome while awaiting extradition proceedings. A final decision is expected by Thursday.
247 - The Italian Public Prosecutor's Office issued an opinion on Wednesday (8) against the release of licensed deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), who remains imprisoned in Rebibbia prison, in Rome. The appeal filed by the defense of the Bolsonaro supporter was analyzed by the Supreme Court of Cassation, the last instance responsible for appeals in the Italian judicial system. According to the column of journalist Gustavo UribeAccording to CNN Brasil, the final decision on the case should be released by Thursday (9).
Defense insists on house arrest
The parliamentarian's defense argues that Zambelli should await the extradition process, requested by Brazil, in an apartment on the outskirts of the Italian capital. However, this request was contested by the Prosecutor's Office, which maintains her imprisonment under a closed regime.
Zambelli has been detained since July and has already appealed to all possible instances in Italy. In Brazil, the Supreme Federal Court sentenced her to ten years in prison for involvement in the hacking of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system.
Letter written in prison
Last week, the congresswoman released a letter written from inside prison. In the text, she reported that she is facing a period of great difficulty, but reaffirmed her confidence in the Italian judicial system. "I am certain of my innocence and I continue to believe in the justice system of Italy," Zambelli declared.
Expectation of a final decision.
The extradition process requested by the Brazilian government now depends on a decision from the Italian Supreme Court. The expectation is that the announcement, scheduled for this week, will determine whether Zambelli will remain imprisoned in Rome or be allowed to serve her sentence under house arrest until the final judgment.
