Jessé Souza: 'Bolsonaro is the perfect product of Brazilian racism, sexism, and perversity'

In an interview with Carta Capital, the sociologist and former president of Ipea provides an overview of the country's bicentennial.

Capital Letter - Brazil's 200 years of independence have not resulted in greater knowledge about slavery and the sovereignty of peoples. This is the assessment of sociologist and former president of Ipea, Jessé Souza. 

“Brazil has never had a learning process to redefine what Brazil is and what it should be for its people,” he explains in an interview with CartaCapital's YouTube channel this Friday, the 9th. “If there isn't an explicit process to change that, the past continues.”

“You produce people who will not be respected as human beings. You create a class of people to be hated so that everyone else can feel superior to them,” and from this, he emphasizes, the behavior of Black people and the poor begins to be considered a crime. “The crime is not what Paulo Guedes does by stealing money from the Brazilian people and giving it to a handful of people; the crime is what Black people do in their religion, in their leisure time.”
