247 - The Secretary for Brazilian Communities Abroad and Consular and Legal Affairs at Itamaraty, Márcia Loureiro, summoned the chargé d'affaires of the United States Embassy in Brasília, Gabriel Escobar, for a meeting this Monday (27). The information is from the newspaper The Globe.
The purpose of the meeting was to clarify the treatment given to Brazilians deported by the US government last Friday. At the meeting, Loureiro reportedly emphasized Itamaraty's position, which classified the way the deportees were treated as unacceptable.
Loureiro also addressed the use of handcuffs, a practice that Brazil has been questioning since 2021, requesting that it be replaced by more respectful treatment.
The Federal Police in Amazonas has launched an investigation into alleged assaults against Brazilians deported from the United States during a flight that arrived in Manaus on Friday (24). They disembarked in Brazil handcuffed, with chains on their feet, and reported mistreatment they allegedly suffered inside the aircraft, including lack of food.
