Pardon is a shortcut found by Bolsonaro to please and strengthen his political base within the police, says Bruno Boghossian.

"The connection with the category has strengthened throughout the term, but it can also be an asset for the president after he leaves office," assesses the journalist.

247 - The journalist Bruno Boghossian In his column in Folha de S. Paulo, he argues that the Christmas pardon, which pardoned police officers convicted of unintentional crimes and directly benefited those involved in the Carandiru Massacre, was the "shortcut" found by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) "to please the police and strengthen his political base in the battalions." The pardon was signed by Bolsonaro last week..

“The connection with the category has strengthened throughout the term, but it can also be an asset for the president after he leaves power,” Boghossian points out. “Brazil has more than 700 security agents spread across the national territory, a politically valuable contingent for the Bolsonaro family. Furthermore, the rhetoric of the war on crime – which includes the celebration of deaths committed by police officers – will continue to be a cornerstone of the Bolsonaro platform,” he adds.

The journalist also points out that "Lula's team believes that the Supreme Court will overturn the pardon granted to those responsible for the massacre. In the future government, these decrees should return to the previous model, when the pardon followed certain conditions (such as the length of the sentence or the prisoner's situation), without benefiting specific categories."
