An internal bulletin, distributed to employees by the management of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), announced that the 2016 population count cannot be carried out because preparations for it should have begun in 2015. The count has an estimated cost of R$ 2,6 billion.

Contacted by Agência Brasil, IBGE informed, through its press office, that the postponement of the survey is due to budget cuts for the agency this year. IBGE reiterated, however, that it is prepared to carry out all surveys. What is preventing the population count is the budget cut, not an internal problem within the institution.

According to the bulletin, IBGE will now focus its efforts on planning the 2016 Agricultural Census and redefining the work plan for the Territorial Base and the Address Registry.

The institute's other research projects, considered fundamental for a macroeconomic overview of the country, are also preserved, including the National Accounts System, the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua), and the Family Budget Survey.
